What is IPTV? It stands for Internet Protocol Television, and it delivers live channels, films and series over an ordinary internet connection instead of a satellite dish or an aerial. You install a player app on a device you already own, sign in with details from a provider, and watch.
What is IPTV compared with satellite and cable?
Satellite and cable broadcast everything at once and let your box pick a channel out of the stream. IPTV sends only the channel you asked for, as data, down the same line that carries your email. That one difference explains almost everything else about it.
| Satellite or cable | IPTV | |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Dish or cable, plus a provider’s box | A device you already own |
| Installation | An engineer visit | An app and a login |
| What limits quality | Weather, signal strength | Your internet connection |
| Contract | Usually 12 to 24 months | Varies by provider |
The three parts of any IPTV setup
Every service works the same way, whoever you buy from. Understanding the three parts makes it obvious which one is at fault when something stops working.
- The subscription. A username, a password and a server address. This is what you buy.
- The player. A third-party app — IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate and others — that takes those details and turns them into a channel list. Providers do not usually make these.
- The connection. Your broadband. Nothing the other two parts do can rescue a line that keeps dropping.
What the words mean
M3U
A plain list of channels and their addresses. It works everywhere and carries nothing else: no films, no series, no programme guide.
Xtream Codes API
A login method rather than a file. The player asks the server what is available and gets live channels, films, series and the guide in one reply. Choose this where it is offered.
EPG
Electronic Programme Guide: the grid of what is on now and next. It arrives as a separate file that can be tens of megabytes, which is why it often appears several minutes after the channels do. Our TV guide page covers the fixes when it stays blank.
VOD
Video on demand: the films and series libraries, watched when you choose rather than at a broadcast time.
What internet speed IPTV needs
Less than most people expect, but it has to be steady. A connection that peaks at 100 Mbps and drops to 15 Mbps for a few seconds will stall where a flat 20 Mbps will not.
| Quality | Comfortable speed |
|---|---|
| HD, 720p | 10 Mbps |
| Full HD, 1080p | 15 to 25 Mbps |
| 4K | 25 to 50 Mbps |
| Two 4K streams plus normal household use | 75 Mbps and up |
Is IPTV legal?
The technology is, entirely. Major broadcasters and telecoms companies deliver television over IP themselves. What matters is whether a particular service holds the rights to what it carries, which is a question about the provider rather than about IPTV. Ask before you buy, and treat any service that will not answer as having answered.
How to try it without committing
Watching it on your own television, on your own connection, tells you more than any review. Our 24-hour free trial needs no card, and the price list shows what each term costs afterwards. One subscription covers one device, so start with the screen you watch most.
