IPTV EPG: why the TV guide is blank, and how to fix it

An IPTV EPG is the on-screen guide that shows what is on now and next. When it is blank or an hour out, the subscription is almost never the problem: it is usually the login the player was set up with, or the time zone on the device. Both take a couple of minutes to put right.

Five ways an IPTV EPG goes wrong

Find the row that matches what you are looking at. Four of the five you can fix yourself in the player; the fifth is ours to sort out.

Common IPTV EPG symptoms, their causes and the fix for each.
What you are seeingWhy it happensWhat fixes it
The guide is completely blankThe player has no guide source set, usually because it was added with an M3U playlist rather than an Xtream Codes loginSign in again using the Xtream Codes details from your welcome email. That login carries the guide with it, so there is nothing separate to add.
Programme times are an hour or two outThe player or the device is set to the wrong time zone, or to a fixed offset left over from a previous setupSet the time zone on the device first, then check the player’s own EPG time-shift setting and return it to zero.
Some channels have a guide, others do notThe guide and the channel list identify those channels differently, so the player cannot pair them upNothing in the app will fix this one. Send us the channel names and we will correct the mapping at our end.
The guide was fine and has gone staleThe scheduled download failed, and the player is still showing the copy it cached days agoForce a refresh in the player’s EPG settings, or clear the app cache and reopen it. Do not clear app data, which deletes your login.
The guide takes minutes to load, or times outA large guide file is being pulled over a slow or busy connection in one goUse the Xtream Codes login instead of the M3U playlist. It fetches the guide as you scroll rather than downloading all of it up front.

Work through these in order

  1. Check which login the player is usingOpen the player’s account or playlist settings. If it shows a playlist URL rather than a username, password and server address, that alone explains a blank guide.
  2. Sign in again with the Xtream Codes detailsRemove the profile and add it again using the username, password and server address from your welcome email. Copy and paste them rather than retyping.
  3. Set the time zone on the device, not the playerGet the device clock right first. Then open the player’s guide settings and set any EPG time shift or offset back to zero.
  4. Force the guide to download againMost players have a refresh or reload option in their EPG settings. Use that before anything more drastic.
  5. Clear the cache, never the dataIf a refresh does not help, clear the player’s cache from your device settings and reopen it. Clearing data instead would wipe your login.
  6. Tell us which channels are affectedIf the guide works everywhere except a handful of channels, it is a mapping job at our end. Email support@roomiptvpro.com or message WhatsApp +44 7475 498002 with the channel names.

Frequently asked questions

What is an EPG?

EPG stands for electronic programme guide: the on-screen schedule that shows what is on now and what is on next. Your subscription carries the guide data, and the player displays it. A blank guide almost never means the subscription is wrong.

Do I have to add an EPG URL myself?

Not if you sign in with the Xtream Codes details from your welcome email, because that login carries the guide with it. Only players set up with an M3U playlist need a separate guide source, which is one reason we suggest the Xtream Codes login.

Why are the programme times wrong?

Almost always the time zone. Either the device clock is set to the wrong region, or the player has an EPG time-shift setting left at a value from a previous setup. Fix the device first, then set the player offset back to zero.

How far ahead does the guide go?

That depends on the channel. Some carry several days of schedule, others only the current and next programme. If a channel you watch has no guide at all, send us its name and we will look at the mapping.

Choosing between the two logins is covered on the player apps page. If the guide is fine but the picture keeps stopping, see fix buffering.

Watch it first. Then decide.
